On the Goal line:
Out of Court – Throw In Defence
When the ball goes out of court on the goal line and it is obvious that the ball is out of court and it is a Throw In for the defence, the umpire only need to say:
Throw In – ” and the name of the team” – indicating the direction of play with the left arm (dropping that arm) and then indicating with the right arm and verbally saying as an example:
Right side of the post or outside the goal circle, etc. Please don’t be pedantic that they need to take the Throw In on the “correct” spot. Remember you are moving to the side line and don’t stay to pin point the area.
If the Throw In is for the defending side. The umpire need to move quickly to the side line to be on the attacking side of play. Umpires can’t wait to indicate the correct spot by putting their toe on the area where the ball went off court and then try to position away from the Throw In.
Immediately when the ball goes out of court run to the side line. Open shoulders to see the Throw In and the players positioning to receive the pass.
Good vision especially on the player taking the Throw In while moving to the side line to see possible infringements which might be:
Held Ball, Footwork, Incorrect Throw In (more than 15cm from the line), Not waiting for all the players to be on court, etc.
Moving then with play down court to just inside the goal third of your co-umpire. Again open shoulders towards your own goal circle to watch the players.
